John McGuire is either a coward or a monster
"A whole civilization will die tonight."
Earlier today, Donald Trump posted the most monstrous thing a U.S. president has ever said in public:
A few Republicans have put out tepid responses criticizing this horrific threat. Most, including VA-05’s John McGuire, have said nothing. (The person answering the phone at his D.C. office simply told me they hadn’t spoken to him about what his president just called “one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World.”)
This is McGuire’s most recent utterance:
If you’re in Congress and you’re not doing something about this—pushing to invoke the 25th Amendment, or signing on to another War Powers bill, or at least saying something—there are only two options:
You’re okay with America threatening to wipe out a whole civilization.
You’re not okay with America threatening to wipe out a whole civilization, but you’re afraid to say anything about it.
In the first case, you’re a monster. In the second, you’re a coward. Which is it, Congressman? Are you wicked, or just fearful?
McGuire’s DC office: (202) 225-4711
Kaine: 202-224-4024 Yesterday he called for getting Congress back in session “deliberate on how we can fulfill the responsibilities we were entrusted with and preserve our democracy against the tyranny our Founders foresaw.” I say fuck deliberating, but at least this beats silence.

I just left a message for McGuire: "The last time I felt this sense of dread and horror was when I saw ISIS bombing enormous Buddhist carvings, hoping to obliterate a culture, it's history, and its people. And now our own president is saying he plans to do the same thing. It is unconscionable behavior and I hope that McGuire has the courage to stand up to these reprehensible and unforgivable actions."
Also sent McGuire: "Where is Congress -- especially the Republicans? Most especially where are you? After trump has gotten the attention of the world, he has told the world exactly what the USA thinks of certain entire populations -- they need to be bombed back to the Stone Age and such -- are major war crimes that what you think your constituency wants? If you think that, what do you base the opinion on? What will you say publicly about this -- does this seem a Christian thing to consider or announce globally? Here's your statement about easter (remember trump's embarrassing easter message) "My wife and I had a wonderful time at this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. Events like the these highlight why keeping our nation’s capital safe, clean, and welcoming matters for families visiting from the Fifth District and across America." I think you could go a littler deeper into real concerns. What is your red line beyond which you will not let trump pass without publicly saying something against it? What do you think your constituents would support as such a red line and how do you know that? Come on -- your bill to assure some right of way in a ski community near Afton doesn't seem to respond to global chaos unloosed by a loose cannon president under no meaningful Congressional check or balance. Please explain how you letting trump run free will help me or anyone else in Louisa County or anywhere else in our District. This time is a major global inflection point and the best you can do is talk about easter eggs and families visiting DC? Man!"
